Scuba Flipper Tips
Scuba Flipper Tips:
1. Although there are many different scuba flippers - different colors, styles, designs, and brands – you’d be surprised how many people on your dive boat have the same exact same fins as you!
A great way to ensure that you always pick-up the right pair is by marking each with waterproof paint.
You can even put your phone number on your gear in case it gets misplaced.
2. Don’t try to walk in fins. One of the most important scuba flipper tips! A mistake I've made multiple times! If you must walk a short distance, try walking backwards. You’ll be less likely to trip on the blades of the flippers (just make sure you watch out for what’s behind you!).
3. Consider all of the factors that will be at work when choosing your fins. Elements such as water temperature, surge, currents, entry point, and personal limitations need to be taken into account for the area you plan on diving.
4. If possible, try rental equipment first. Many dive shops and vacation spots rent various models of flippers. This is a great way to get a feel for the different types of fins without making an investment.
5. Always (always!) try your fins on with your scuba boots.
6. Purchase your fins from a company with a good return policy. Many dive shops and online stores will allow you to return used equipment. This is crucial if you are five dives into your new flippers and they are still hurting your feet.
7. Buy an extra buckle and strap (if you go with the open heel design) at the same time you purchase your fins. It is nice to have these on-hand in case you run into a problem in the future.
8. Get a carrying bag. Not only does it make transporting all of your gear easier, but you will also treat your equipment better. Of all the scuba flipper tips, this one will save you a lot of money over time.
9. If you are planning on purchasing long fins, ensure that the dive boat or the dive class that you are taking a course with allows them. Many centers don’t allow long fins because, due to their length, they feel they prove a greater danger to coral and sea life.
10. If you choose to purchase a pair of the positively buoyant scuba flippers, ensure that you also have ankle weights to counteract the force. Otherwise, you will tire much quicker than usual.
11. Check out
The Scuba Registry
and keep track of all of your scuba equipment in your virtual 'gear bag.' Should your scuba flippers or another piece of gear ever go missing, you simply log into your account, select "submit report" in the members area and fill in the required information. Your Gear Report is then broadcast to registered members of The Scuba Registry. This includes individual divers and any dive shops affiliated with The Scuba Registry. It's a great way to protect your scuba gear - plus, it's free!
12. If you purchase an open heel flipper with straps, make sure that the straps are attached on both sides and that there is a quick release buckle. The buckle will allow you to loosen the flipper with out detaching the straps – which often comes in handy.
