Scuba Flippers as Training Aids for Your Workout.
Swimmers and divers alike often use scuba flippers as training aids to help improve their kick strength, ankle flexibility, and body position.
For swimmers who are trying to improve their technique, using flippers allows you to hold the correct body position and focus solely on the other parts of your form.
Plus, many agree that after routinely using fins while training, once you swim without them, your body actually remembers the feeling of swimming faster and tries to duplicate the pattern.
For working out your legs, you can use a variety of scuba flippers; however, most agree that the short fins are the best style for training. You can even make your own short flippers by cutting off around three inches from an old pair. This will usually produce a pair of fins that are soft and flexible.
Medium length fins will give you more power in each kick; however, you won’t be able to kick as fast due to the resistance. If you want to work on your butterfly or breaststroke, medium fins are your best choice.
Long bladed fins or the vented scuba fins are not recommended as training aids. Even though they are great for freediving and scuba, they aren’t the best design for strengthening your legs. Because they are so long, they produce very slow, smooth movements – which won’t give you as good of a leg workout as the shorter varieties. The long fins, if they are your only pair, will help to increase your flexibility and work load, but overall, they don’t offer as many benefits as a short or medium length fin.
Monofins are a great tool for improving a range of muscles. Not only do they workout your legs, but they also target the abdomen and back.
In addition to building strength and flexibility, using scuba flippers as training aids can also improve your cardiovascular health. Since the greatest cardio benefits come from utilizing the highest percentage of the body’s muscles, it makes sense that swimmers who target their large leg muscles with the help of fins, will benefit from a more demanding workout that increases the level of conditioning and burns more calories.
